Below, the second part introduces the discourse, which has two [sections]: first, praising the Buddha's venerable virtues, manifesting light, and assembling the congregation; second, from "led the bhikṣus" onward, leading the assembled congregation to the place of the Way. As for the term "Pañcala", here it translates as "general collection"; it is also said that using a cage to cage lions and the like is called pañcala. Because the people of this place trapped lions and the like by caging them in cages, this name was established for that reason. A place where people gather and reside is called a "settlement" (juluo). A luo is also a courtyard. According to the Western Regions Record, it is in the country of Takṣaśilā, which is in the territory of Northern India, situated northwest of the country of Kaśmīra. This place of relinquishing the body is at the northern border of the country of [Takṣa]śilā: crossing the Sindhu River and traveling two hundred li southeast, passing through the Great Stone Gate, Prince Sattva relinquished his body here to feed a ravenous tigress and her cubs. The earth there, as well as the grasses and trees, is faintly tinged with a crimson colour, as if dyed with blood. When people tread upon its ground, it feels as if they were bearing thorns and prickles; whether skeptical or believing, none fail to be grieved and sorrowful. Third, from "The Buddha told the venerable" onward, the Buddha instructs Ānanda to prepare the Dharma seat: first, the Buddha's command; next, carrying out the order; and finally, the entreaty.
