The Sūtra [states]: "The first prince spoke thus: 'Alas! It has been seven days since this tigress gave birth. Surrounded by her seven cubs, she has had no leisure to seek food. Driven by hunger and thirst, she will surely end up eating her cubs.' Prince Sattva asked, 'What does this tigress usually eat?' The first prince answered, saying: 'Tigers, leopards, jackals, and lions eat only hot blood and flesh; there is no other food or drink that can save this tigress from her emaciation.' Having heard these words, the second prince spoke thus: 'This tigress is emaciated and driven by hunger and thirst, with little life remaining. How could we seek such food and drink that are so difficult to obtain? Who moreover would give up his own life for her sake to relieve her suffering from hunger?' The first prince said: 'Of all things difficult to abandon, none surpasses one's own body.' Prince Sattva said: 'Each of us now cherishes and clings to his own body, and lacking wisdom, we are unable to bring benefit to others.'"
