Below, four verses are the fourth [part], the practice of the Dharma through cultivating and learning accordingly. There are ten [practices]; this is only one kind, namely the first, making offerings. Offerings are of ten kinds; this is the sixth, making joint offerings, because by raining down the seven jewels he universally bestowed them upon sentient beings to make offerings together. Within it there are four: first, half a verse on the purpose; next, one and a half verses on making the vow; next, one verse on the vow being fulfilled; next, one verse on making offerings. In the first, regarding the purpose: making offerings to this sūtra is the Dharma; in this offering it is the Buddha and Saṅgha. The Buddha is the expositor, the Saṅgha is the learner, and the sūtra is what is learned, hence they are joint offerings. Question: Why does he not make offerings to the World-Honoured One Ratnaśikhin, but only mentions all the Saṅgha? Answer: Because the Buddha was already extinct. Or, the preceding line offers to the Buddha and the following line offers to the Saṅgha. If so, since the Buddha was extinct, why does it say he made offerings to the Buddha? Answer: Because he knew the Buddha is permanently abiding, or because he made offerings to the Buddha's image.
