The Sūtra [states]: "At that time, Prince Mahāsattva re-entered the forest, reached the place of the tigress, stripped off his clothes and hung them upon a bamboo, and made this vow: 'For the sake of all sentient beings in the dharmadhātu, / With resolve I seek the state of unsurpassed bodhi; / Arousing great compassion that is unshakable, / I shall give up the body loved by ordinary beings. / Bodhi is free from afflictions and free from tormenting distress, / It is what is delighted in by all the wise. / For all sentient beings in the suffering ocean of the three realms, / I now pull them out and rescue them, causing them to be at peace.' / Having spoken these words, the prince threw himself down and lay before the starving tigress. Due to the majestic power of the Bodhisattva's loving-kindness and compassion, the tigress was unable to do anything. Seeing this, the Bodhisattva immediately climbed a high cliff and cast his body down to the ground. He further had this thought: 'The tigress is now emaciated and cannot eat me.' He immediately arose to search for a knife, but in the end could not find one; then with a dry bamboo he pierced his neck to let out blood, and gradually approached the side of the tigress."
