Sūtra: 'Then, having seen the earth shake, the first prince said to his younger brother: "The great earth, mountains, and rivers all tremble and quake; / the directions are obscured and dark, the sun lacks radiance; / heavenly flowers fall in confusion, filling the air— / this is certainly the sign of my younger brother casting off his body." Having heard his elder brother's words, the second prince spoke a gāthā: "I heard the merciful and compassionate words of Mahāsattva; / seeing that hungry tigress emaciated and weak, / tormented by hunger and distress, I feared she would devour her cubs; / I now suspect that our brother has cast off his body." Then the two princes were filled with great sorrow and distress; weeping and lamenting, they together followed the path back to the tigress's den. They saw their younger brother's clothing hanging on bamboo branches, and his bones and hair strewn about this way and that, the flowing blood having turned to mud and staining the earth. Having seen this, they fainted away, unable to bear it; falling upon the bones, it was long before they revived. They then arose, raised their hands, wailed in grief, and wept bitterly, simultaneously lamenting: "Our brother's countenance was handsome and dignified, / singularly beloved by our parents. / Why did we come out together, / yet you cast off your body and do not return? / When our parents ask, / how shall we answer? / It would be better to perish along with you— / how could we preserve our own lives?" Then the two princes, weeping and grieving in distress, gradually left and departed.'
