Below, within the relatives' wailing and longing, is the third [part], the parents' mournful lamentation. Herein are eleven [points]: first, the queen's shock, which has eight [aspects]: first, dreaming of inauspicious portents while asleep; second, from "When the earth shook" below, being startled awake by the earthquake; third, from "she spoke these words" below, speaking of her ominous signs; fourth, from "the queen's two breasts" below, the flow of milk moved by emotion; fifth, from "At that time, a maidservant" below, the maidservant hearing the talk; sixth, from "Greatly alarmed and frightened" below, running in to deliver the news; seventh, from "Then, having heard this, the queen" below, the mother's distress upon hearing it; eighth, from "She went to the great king" below, tearfully approaching the king. According to the verse, it explains the preceding omens in full, whereas this prose text is abridged. Second, from "Having heard these words, the king" below, the father's sorrowful panic. Third, from "He then wiped his tears" below, the king consoling the queen. It is the constant custom of Western countries that upon meeting, they offer praise and call [a consort] "Noble Lady" (bhadre). Fourth, from "The king, along with his ministers" below, the king and ministers setting out to search. According to the verses below, the ministers should first have searched and only afterward the king and queen gone out; here the text summarizes and simply says they went out to search. Herein there are again seven [sub-points]: 1. searching in all directions; 2. from "Before long" below, a minister coming to report; 3. from "The king, hearing these words" below, the father's sorrowful lament upon hearing it; 4. from "Having heard this, the queen" below, the mother's renewed grieving; 5. from "Next, a second minister" below, the minister arriving and the king asking whether [the prince] is alive or dead; 6. from "The second minister" below, the minister sobbing without answering; 7. from "The queen asked, saying" below, the queen frantic and urging him to report. Fifth, from "Then the second minister" below, learning the details concerning the son. According to the verses, two ministers should each have reported; here in the prose, one minister is omitted. Sixth, from "The king and the queen" below, choking with sorrow after learning of it. Seventh, from "toward the place where he cast off his body" below, going to the place of casting off the body. Eighth, from "saw his bones" below, beholding [the remains] and breaking down. Ninth, from "Then the ministers and others" below, the ministers and retinue sprinkling water. Tenth, from "The king and the queen" below, lamenting after reviving. Eleventh, from "At that time, the queen" below, the mother weeping and declaring her grief; first, the sūtra narrator relates it, and next the mother sorrowfully declares it, wherein two verses express grief and two verses recount the bad omens.
