As for explaining the title: zàn (praise) means to commend; tàn (eulogise) means to chant; that is, to commend and chant. One should say: praising good virtues regarding phenomena is called zàn; eulogising and proclaiming in accord with principle is called tàn. The first is person, the latter is Dharma. Or else, both person and Dharma generally encompass praising and eulogising. "Bodhisattvas" are the persons capable of praising. "Ten directions" states the realms from which they come. Wishing to lead sentient beings to be earnest and reverent, it cites their coming from far away in the ten directions. When superior persons themselves still proclaim [the virtues], how could inferior ones not sing them? Furthermore, it displays the capacity of the superior ones, not the base and inferior, wishing to cause them to admire the superior and advance in cultivation. Thus, a subsequent chapter says: "To cause those who do not yet know to comply and cultivate."
