As for resolving difficulties: Question: Why did the old sūtra combine this entirely into one chapter, while this new translation divides it into four chapters? Answer: According to the Sanskrit sūtra manuscript, at the head of every chapter one bodhisattva was written or marked; now following the Sanskrit manuscript, the praises of the four individuals are each recorded separately, hence it is now divided into four. The former [translators], seeing that they were all praises of the Buddha, combined them into one chapter. Another explanation: The old text had a lacuna and lacked these marks, taking them simply as praising. In the new sūtra there are four people, whereas in the old sūtra there was no praise by Mahāpratibhāna; hence the expansion and combination differ. Question: According to the old sūtra manuscript, immeasurable bodhisattvas went from this world to the realm of the Tathāgata of Mount Ratnacchatra to pay obeisance and praise that Buddha. The new sūtra, however, says: "Each went from their own land to Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa, and having paid obeisance to the World-Honoured One, praised him with one voice." How can they be so contradictory? Answer: The old was erroneous and the present is correct. Why is that? Hearing the sūtra in this place, they ought to praise this Buddha. Moreover, based on the above, there were bodhisattvas of the ten directions; why would they all go to the land of Mount Ratnacchatra to praise that Buddha? If one says: The preaching of the sūtra was due to Ruciraketu, and Ruciraketu would later attain Buddhahood named Ratnaparvata, hence they went to praise him—this too is not so. Why? The present Buddha Ratnaparvata is not the person of Ruciraketu, and that Buddha is not the lord of preaching or granting [the sūtra]. Moreover, it does not state later that these bodhisattvas came from that land; how could it be said that they relied on that Buddha's power? Therefore, although the request came from Ruciraketu, the one capable of expounding was Śākyamuni Buddha, and their hearing the Dharma and coming here was also entirely through Śākyamuni's power; he was Ruciraketu's teacher, and therefore they praised Śākyamuni. The new text is authoritative. The text is divided into three sections: first, the clouds of bodhisattvas assemble; next, they formally express obeisance and praise; finally, the Tathāgata praises and confirms them.
