Below is declaring the vow to protect, which has eight verses divided into two: the first four verses, seeing the benefits, vow to protect it themselves. Within this: one verse, knowing the Buddha's words are true; the next verse, knowing the Buddha's mahākaruṇā; the next verse, knowing the provisions are complete, vowing; the next verse, knowing it can eliminate hindrances, vowing. Next there are four verses of rejoicing in others' protection. Within this: the first verse, seeing Brahmā, Śakra, and the eight classes protect it; the next verse, seeing the spirits of earth, sky, and so forth protect it; the next two verses, seeing the Buddha himself protect it—the first verse praises the Buddha's virtues as complete in protecting and maintaining this sūtra, and the next verse reveals the definitiveness of the protection. This meaning is that, seeing the Buddha, Brahmā, Śakra, and all others protect it, they give rise to deep rejoicing, and therefore vow to protect it themselves. Question: If they give rise to rejoicing upon seeing Brahmā, Śakra, and others protecting this sūtra, why is it only in the text below that Brahmā, Śakra, and others are said to vow to protect it? Answer: They see what was expounded previously in the 'Chapter on the Protection by the Four Heavenly Kings' and the 'Chapter on the Protection by Yakṣas and Others', and therefore give rise to rejoicing. Another explanation: they see earlier in the prose general vow to protect that sixty koṭis of devas in the great assembly reverently protect it; these are Brahmā, Śakra, and the rest, so seeing this presents no fault.
