Sūtra: At that time, the King of Māra joined his palms with reverence and spoke gāthās, saying:
"If there are those who uphold this sūtra,
They are able to subdue all afflictions;
Such classes of sentient beings,
I shall protect, causing them to be peaceful and happy.
If there are those who preach this sūtra,
All māras shall not obtain an opportunity [to harm them];
By the Buddha's spiritual power,
I shall protect them."
At that time, the devaputra Mañjuśrī also spoke gāthās before the Buddha, saying:
"The wondrous bodhi of all buddhas
Is preached within this sūtra;
If one upholds this sūtra,
That is an offering to the Tathāgata.
I shall uphold this sūtra,
And preach it for koṭis of devas;
Those who reverently listen,
I shall encourage to reach the state of bodhi."
At that time, Maitreya Bodhisattva joined his palms with reverence and spoke gāthās, saying:
"Seeing those who abide in bodhi,
I shall be their unasked friend;
Even abandoning body and life,
In order to protect this king of sūtras.
Having heard such a Dharma as this,
I shall go to the Tuṣita heaven;
Through the World-Honoured One's empowered protection,
I shall preach it widely for humans and devas."
At that time, the Elder Mahākāśyapa joined his palms with reverence and spoke gāthās, saying:
"The Buddha, in the Śrāvakayāna,
Said that I had scant wisdom;
I now, in accordance with my own power,
Shall guard and uphold such a sūtra as this.
If there are those who uphold this sūtra,
I shall embrace and assist them,
Bestow upon them the power of eloquence,
And constantly follow them praising, 'Well done!'"
At that time, the Venerable Ānanda joined his palms toward the Buddha and spoke gāthās, saying:
"I personally heard from the Buddha
Immeasurable multitudes of scriptures,
Yet I have never heard such a
King among the profound and wondrous Dharmas as this.
Now having heard this sūtra,
I receive it directly before the Buddha;
For all those who delight in bodhi,
I shall broadly proclaim and propagate it."
