Below, the second part, the arising of doubt, has two sections: first, setting forth; second, asking the question. Within the setting forth there are four: first, adducing the reason for their coming; second, from "how is it" onward, a brief challenge and inquiry—they came to listen, so how can they be given the prediction?; third, from "World-Honoured One, I have never" onward, stating the doubtful thought; fourth, from "as other immeasurable" onward, revealing the meaning of the doubt. Next, from "World-Honoured One" onward, the second section, asking the question, has three parts: first, a general question; next, specific questions; finally, requesting the answer. "By what cause and condition" is the general question regarding the underlying reason. Or, one's own practice is called the cause, and good spiritual friends are the condition. "Cultivating what superior practice" and so forth are the specific questions. First, asking what superior practice they cultivated is asking about the practice of cultivating the six pāramitās. Second, asking what good roots they planted is asking about cultivating the practice of merit. Or, the capacity to initiate cultivation and obtain the future fruit is called practice, while the capacity to generate subsequent good causes is called root. Or, the initial arising is called root, and subsequent cultivation is called practice, meaning their essence is without distinction. Moreover, the ten pāramitās are called practices, and the ten offerings are called roots, meaning their senses differ slightly. The words from "coming from that heaven" onward sum up the intent of the question. It is like asking: by what cause and condition, coming from that heaven, did they forthwith obtain the prediction? Cultivating what superior practice and planting what good roots did they come from that heaven, and so on? Furthermore, looking at it, it may be that because of hearing they obtained the prediction, in which case there would be no doubt; but the doubt is rather: by what cause did they descend from heaven, succeed in hearing this sūtra, and thereby obtain the prediction? Finally, from "I only pray that the World-Honoured One" onward, she requests an answer.
