Below, the sixth [part] is the father explaining it for his sake. Here, the first [part] is the compiler's introductory remark; next, from 'relying now upon the ancient ṛṣis' onward, comprising thirty-two verses, is the father's direct explanation in verse. It is divided into three: first, one verse consenting to speak; next, thirty verses of direct explanation; finally, one verse summarizing. Within the direct explanation there are again three: first, four verses determining the seasons and periods. 'Expounded distinctly in three-month units' means three months by three months making one season, concluding the previous four seasons. 'Two by two they make one seasonal period' means two months by two months making one seasonal period, indicating the subsequent six seasons. Next, thirteen verses directly answer the questions. Later, from 'moreover, one should know' onward, twelve verses offer re-analysis. However, among the answers to the questions, the first verse indicates instructing one to regulate and harmonize; the next three verses answer the first question, within which the first verse directly answers the causes of illness arising, and two verses make known the locations of illness. First, the rasa-dhātu is called in Sanskrit *rasa*, located between the spleen and stomach. When food and drink reach here, they divide into two portions: first, the *khara-dhātu*, which is the dross that becomes feces and urine; second, the rasa-dhātu, which is the nutrient essence that thoroughly sustains the parts of the body. Second is blood, third is flesh, fourth is fat, fifth is bone, sixth is marrow, and seventh is brain. The next two verses on dhātus answer the second question, clarifying the count of the disease entities and their times of arising. Deducing from this by analogy with the five elements: phlegm is water, wind belongs to wood, and heat is fire. Water gestates in the sixth month and dies in the first month; wood gestates in the ninth month and dies in the fifth month; fire gestates in the twelfth month and dies in the eighth month; therefore, they will decay and die in sickness. At times of violent flare-up, it is also at these times that they can be cured. It also concurrently answers the initial four-seasons question in the fifth question. Next, two verses answer the third question; next, one verse answers the fifth question; next, four verses answer the fourth question. Question: Why is the sequence of the answers different from that of the questions? Answer: Because following the answer to the third [question] on food, drink, and nourishment, he took the occasion to explain the periods of flare-up; therefore the sequence of the answers differs from that of the questions. Within the answer on the methods of curing, it is divided into three: first, one verse indicates; next, two verses are the methods of treatment; finally, one verse concludes.
