Sūtra: "'Moreover, one should know the eight arts,
which comprehensively encompass all medical methods;
if one is clearly skilled in these,
one can cure the illnesses of sentient beings.
They are: acupuncture and lancing wounds and breaks,
bodily afflictions together with ghosts and spirits,
malignant poisons, and pediatrics,
prolonging life, and increasing vigor.
First observe their physical form and complexion,
their speech, nature, and conduct,
and afterward inquire about their dreams,
to know whether wind, heat, or phlegm is distinct.
Dry and emaciated with sparse hair,
their mind having no stable abiding,
speaking much and dreaming of flying:
such a person is of wind constitution.
Growing white hair at a young age,
sweating profusely and prone to much anger,
intelligent and dreaming of seeing fire:
such a person is of heat constitution.
With a stable mind and well-proportioned body,
deliberate in thought, with an oily head,
dreaming of seeing water and white objects:
know that this is a phlegm constitution.
The combined constitution possesses all together,
either two or having all three complete;
whichever one has an exclusive increase,
know that this is their constitution.
Having known their fundamental constitution,
one dispenses medicine according to the illness;
confirming that there are no signs of death,
then can one be called a person who can be saved.
The sense faculties perceiving objects perversely,
arousing arrogance toward the respected physician,
giving rise to anger toward relatives and friends:
know that these are signs of death.
The white of the left eye alters,
the tongue turns black, the bridge of the nose leans,
the ear rims differ from before,
and the lower lip sags downward.
The single kind, harītakī,
is completely endowed with the six flavors;
it can eliminate all illnesses,
being the peerless king among medicines.
Furthermore, the three fruits and the three pungents
are easily obtained among all medicines;
together with granulated sugar, honey, ghee, and milk,
these can cure manifold illnesses.
As for the remaining various medicinal substances,
they may be increased according to the disease.
First arouse a compassionate mind;
do not scheme after wealth and profit.'"
