Below, thirteen verses offer re-analysis, divided into five: First, the first two verses teach the secret arts, within which one verse indicates and one verse explains. The eight arts are: 1. the method of treating needle punctures; 2. the method of treating wounds and fractures; 3. treating bodily afflictions, namely the previous four diseases; 4. damage by ghosts; 5. poisoning; 6. treating infants and children; 7. prolonging life; 8. nourishing the body. Second, the next five and a half verses teach how to recognize the disease constitutions. Within this, the first verse indicates, the next four verses distinguish constitutions, and the latter half-verse concludes the method. Third, next, from 'confirming that there are no signs of death' onward, two and a half verses teach how to observe signs of death. Fourth, next, from 'harītakī' onward demonstrates the marvelous medicines. This expounds them generally, not explaining individual treatments. The first verse is about reducing medicines; the next verse is about tonifying medicines. Fascicle 4 of the *Nirvāṇa-sūtra* says: 'The six flavors are: first, bitter; second, sour; third, sweet; fourth, pungent; fifth, salty; sixth, bland.' In the Western regions this medicine is the supreme one; it should be the *piṇḍa* medicine expounded in the *Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra*. The three fruits are: first, harītakī; second, āmalaka, also called āmalikā, which is what old versions erroneously called *āmrātaka* fruit; third, bibhītaka, which resembles āmalaka but is slightly larger. The three pungents are: first, dry ginger; second, black pepper; third, pippalī; together with granulated sugar and so forth, making ten easily obtainable tonifying remedies. Fifth, the next one verse gives guidelines, admonitions, and exhortations.
