Commentary: This clarifies eliminating obstacles and cultivating causes. Because beings are bound by beginningless self-view, they are unable to understand. Even if they manage to understand, they give rise to terror regarding saṃsāra and joy regarding nirvāṇa, unable to benefit widely. Furthermore, because self-grasping is the root of all obstacles. Although this self-view pertains to both the sixth and seventh consciousnesses, the intention is to eliminate the seventh, because it obstructs non-abiding [nirvāṇa] which is supreme, and is the root of defilement. Therefore the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi-śāstra, explaining the wisdom of equality, states: 'It is the uncommon basis of the wondrously observing wisdom, established by non-abiding nirvāṇa, of one taste and continuous until the end of future time.'
