The commentary says: Later, clarifying obtaining through severance is divided into three: first reiterating the obstructing factors, next distinguishing what can sever, and finally concluding. 'These three characteristics' reiterates. 'Able to understand, eliminate, and purify' distinguishes what can sever. Through awakening to the conceptualized nature, it is said to be 'able to understand'; through cultivating non-conceptual wisdom, one is 'able to eliminate'; because the wisdom of the defiled dependent can sever obstacles, it is 'able to purify.' Through awakening to the conceptualized characteristic, one obtains the transformation body. Because of having the grasped characteristic of self, when facing circumstances one fails to realize the emptiness of objects, and therefore cannot manifest the transformation body. Cultivating the pure dependent, because wisdom severs defilement, one obtains the response body. Because when wisdom arises it can sever obstacles and defilements, it can purely realize the perfected nature and reveal the attainment of the dharmakāya; therefore one attains the three bodies.
