The commentary says: This concludes the establishment that the Dharma-body is the support for the response and transformation [bodies], capable of initiating various beneficial activities. Because the objective sphere is pure, it is the basis of the truth of cessation; because wisdom is pure, it is the basis of the truth of the path. 'Because' indicates the reason: since the tathatā of phenomena and the wisdom conforming to tathatā are the basis of cessation and the path, the response and transformation [bodies] rely on this to initiate various activities. As the Mahāyānasaṃgraha briefly clarifies five activities, it says 'various.' As for the five activities: First, the activity of rescuing from calamities and disasters, because it can cause the blind to gain eyes, and so forth. Second, the activity of rescuing from bad destinies, because it pulls [beings] out of unwholesome states and establishes them in wholesome states. Third, the activity of rescuing from improper means, because it causes non-Buddhists to abandon improper means in their search for liberation and establishes them in the Tathāgata's holy teaching. Fourth, the activity of rescuing from the view of a personal identity (satkāyadṛṣṭi), because it bestows on them the path capable of transcending the three realms. Asabhāva explains: 'Namely, that in which the false view of self operates consists of all contaminated phenomena of the three realms; it bestows the Dharma of transcendence upon them.' Fifth, the activity of rescuing from the two vehicles, because it rescues bodhisattvas who wish to proceed to other vehicles, as well as śrāvakas of indeterminate lineage, establishing them to cultivate the practices of the Great Vehicle. Question: If it causes them to attain the two vehicles, is that not an activity? Answer: That is precisely the previous third and fourth activities.
