「大慧！略說有三種識，廣說有八相。何等為三？謂真識、現識及分別事識。大慧！譬如明鏡持諸色像，現識處現亦復如是。」

"Mahāmati, briefly speaking there are three kinds of consciousness, and extensively speaking there are eight lakṣaṇas. What are the three? They are the true consciousness, the manifesting consciousness, and the consciousness discriminating objects. Mahāmati, just as a bright mirror retains all forms and reflections, so too does the manifesting consciousness manifest in its place."
