Above, it only stated that they speak of the three conditions as productive causes, without yet mentioning the affairs they perform. What are the things performed? Expedients, causes and effects, and svalakṣaṇas span across the three periods of time. 'Expedients' are the doctrines of the tīrthikas; 'causes and effects' are the causes and effects cultivated according to their teachings; 'svalakṣaṇas' are the characteristics appearing from their own minds. These affairs of the three periods of time are spoken of in terms of what is proximate. If one probes their root, the marks of the two kinds of having seeds and lacking seeds are handed down mutually, and the ground of reflective thought turns—namely, eighty thousand kalpas ago, from the Primal Darkness first arose buddhi (intellect), from buddhi arose ahaṃkāra (ego-nature), from ego-nature arose the mahābhūtas (elements), progressively transforming and giving rise to the twenty-five principles. All of this comes from the perfumed residual vāsanās of the faults of their own heterodox views, leading them to speak in this way.
