The preceding clarified that reality is certainly not the realm of tīrthikas or the Hīnayāna; nevertheless, if one can cultivate and practice the Dharma-gate fundamentally possessed by the mind, what worry is there of not achieving it? Therefore he now concludes with an exhortation. The sensory realms of direct perception (pratyakṣa) all without exception emerge from one's own mind; deluded and unaware, one grasps and clings to them through vikalpa. "Grasping" refers to that which grasps; "and the grasper" refers to that which is grasped. If one wishes to understand the false and reveal reality, one should live alone far from worldly customs, be free from torpor and distraction, and awaken in the first, middle, and final watches of the night to the so-called expedient Dharma-gates of practice. Now, scriptures and treatises of wrong views are the root of tīrthikas, and the marks of emptiness in the Hīnayāna are the illness of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas; if one knows how to stay far away from them, one can then thoroughly penetrate the marks of vikalpa that are the appearances of one's own mind, and arrive at the realm of reality.
