The Buddha told Mahāmati: "The purification is gradual, not sudden. Just as an āmra fruit ripens gradually and not suddenly, so too the Tathāgata's purification of the stream of appearances of one's own mind of all sentient beings is gradual, not sudden. Just as a potter makes various vessels gradually and not suddenly, so too the Tathāgata's purification of the stream of appearances of one's own mind of all sentient beings is gradual, not sudden. Just as the great earth gradually generates the myriad things and does not generate them suddenly, so too the Tathāgata's purification of the stream of appearances of one's own mind of all sentient beings is gradual, not sudden. Just as a person learns music, writing, painting, and various arts, mastering them gradually and not suddenly, so too the Tathāgata's purification of the stream of appearances of one's own mind of all sentient beings is gradual, not sudden. Just as a bright mirror suddenly reflects all form-images without marks, so too the Tathāgata's purification of the stream of appearances of one's own mind of all sentient beings suddenly reveals the pure realm of marklessness and nonexistence. Just as the discs of the sun and moon suddenly illuminate and display all form-images, so too for sentient beings who are free from the faults and vāsanās of appearances of their own minds, the Tathāgata suddenly displays the supreme realm of inconceivable jñāna. Just as the storehouse consciousness suddenly discriminates and knows the appearances of its own mind, as well as the realm of bodily establishment and enjoyment, so too those dependent buddhas suddenly ripen the realm where sentient beings dwell, establishing practitioners in the Akaniṣṭha heaven. Just as the dependent buddhas created by the Dharma Buddha shine with radiance, so too the noble approach of personal realization illuminates and extinguishes the evil views and vikalpa of the reality or non-reality of dharmalakṣaṇas."
