This section demonstrates the characteristics of gradual and sudden purification. From 'The Buddha told Mahāmati' downward, it demonstrates the characteristics of gradual purification, containing four similes in total, each with the dharma, the simile, and their correspondence, all visible in the text. From 'Just as a bright mirror' downward, it demonstrates the characteristics of sudden purification, also having four similes. First, 'form-images without marks' refers to images that are identical to brightness; the substance of images is originally empty, which serves to illustrate that the markless realm in the dharma is originally nonexistent; hence it says 'marklessness and nonexistence'. Where the simile of the storehouse consciousness says 'suddenly discriminates and knows', it is not that the storehouse consciousness discriminates, but that it discriminates the realms manifested by the storehouse consciousness. Like a mirror reflecting images, this illustrates the dependent buddhas suddenly ripening the realms inhabited by sentient beings of great faculties. In speaking of 'dependent buddhas', these are the sambhogakāya buddhas, because the sambhogakāya depends on the dharmakāya. In speaking of 'just as the dependent buddhas created by the Dharma Buddha', the Ru Lengqie says: 'Just as the Dharma Buddha suddenly manifests the sambhogakāya buddhas and nirmāṇakāya buddhas.' The 'noble approach of personal realization' is the holy realm of personal realization itself. It illuminates and extinguishes the evil views of those tīrthikas who cling to the reality or non-reality [of dharmas].
