The five similes of the river and so on illustrate the characteristic of moment-to-moment decay. The three similes of restlessness and so on are the characteristics of false consciousness, hence illustrated by the ape, the fly, and wind and fire. Yet all are the habitual causes of beginningless falsehood, falling into the wheel of birth and death in the three realms of existence; hence it is compared to a well-sweep wheel. 'Various bodily forms, etc.' illustrates the illusory body. It is like magical arts being able to release a mechanism, or divine incantations being able to raise an image. The Ru Lengqie says: 'Just as a dead corpse moves by the power of a spell, or a wooden figure moves because of a mechanism.' 'Skillful knowledge of those characteristics' means skillfully knowing the characteristics of the similes above; this is the wondrous wisdom that contemplates the selflessness of persons.
