This says that when a bodhisattva properly knows the characteristics of mind, intellect, mental consciousness, the five dharmas, the svabhāvas, and the two kinds of selflessness, he can proceed to the ultimate stage. Having accomplished his own practice, he should transform sentient beings, manifesting forms according to their kinds; hence it says 'they assume all kinds of forms'. When it says 'just as the basis of the imagined [svabhāva]...', it compares the bodhisattva's establishing conversions in accordance with capacities to how the false imaginations of ordinary people arise dependent on conditions. Further, when it says 'like [a wish-fulfilling jewel] of many colors...', it illustrates that the bodhisattva, with one body and all bodies, universally manifests in all Buddha-lands, and together with all the assemblies listens to and receives the Tathāgata preaching the Dharma. What is preached is like an illusion, like a dream, like an image in a mirror, and like the moon in the water, far removed from production and cessation as well as annihilation and permanence, not abiding in the stage of the two vehicles.
