This questions and explains the emptiness of characteristics. When it says 'the individual and general characteristics of all natures are empty', it is because all dharmas originally lack the four natures of self, other, both, and separated [causes], yet sentient beings falsely grasp them as arising from the four natures. The four natures are the four alternatives; seeking the marks of their arising through the four alternatives, nothing at all can be found, hence it is called 'emptiness of characteristics'. 'Mutually accumulated' refers to the aggregates, realms, and bases mutually depending on one another. 'Upon discrimination there is no nature' means that upon analysis and investigation, none have any self-nature. There being no nature, they are non-existent, hence it says 'characteristics do not arise'. 'The natures of self, other, and both have no nature' explains the above meaning again: 'self' means arising from self, 'other' means arising from other, 'both' means arising from both, and 'no [nature]' means arising without a cause; arising without a cause is just freedom from arising. 'Characteristics do not abide' means not abiding in characteristics.
