Mutual emptiness refers precisely to the emptiness imagined by tīrthikas. Stated in contrast to this, it merely empties that while not emptying this; hence it says 'in that there is no this, and in this there is no that'. When it says 'like Mṛgāra...', Mṛgāra is a person's name; his mother, the upāsikā Viśākhā, deeply revered the Three Jewels and built a monastery to accommodate bhikṣus, where elephants, horses, and the like were not kept. Saying that the mansion is empty means only that it is empty of elephants and horses, not that the assembly of bhikṣus is also empty. From 'it is not that the mansion...' downward, it comprehensively refutes the emptiness falsely imagined by tīrthikas, meaning that even if they can empty the mansion of bhikṣus, they cannot empty the nature of the two; even if they take this place being without elephants and horses as empty, other places are not without them. This being so, the subject and object, that and this, remain fully intact—what emptiness is there? From 'this is called... of all dharmas' downward is a statement of concluding reprimand: the first 'that' refers to the tīrthikas, who merely lack that in this, but cannot be without this. Furthermore, it says that among the seven kinds of emptiness, mutual emptiness is the coarsest because it is the false imagination of tīrthikas; therefore students are admonished to keep far away from it.
