"World-Honoured One, tīrthikas also speak of existence arising from nonexistence, and the World-Honoured One also speaks of nonexistence arising and then perishing after arising. As the World-Honoured One has spoken: 'Ignorance conditions formations, and so forth up to old age and death'—this is the World-Honoured One's teaching of causelessness, not a teaching of causality. The World-Honoured One establishes and speaks thus: 'Because this exists, that exists'; this is not establishing gradual arising. When examined, the tīrthikas' teaching is superior, not the Tathāgata's. Why is this? World-Honoured One, the tīrthikas speak of a cause that does not arise from conditions and yet produces things. The World-Honoured One speaks of observing causes in dependence on things and observing things in dependence on causes; in this way, causes and conditions become confused and disordered, and there is an endless cycle of mutual dependence."
