The doctrine of causes and conditions has both correct and deviant forms: what the Buddha speaks is correct, and what the tīrthikas speak is deviant. These two must be distinguished; therefore, Mahāmati brings them up together to ask. 'Do not speak of the path yourself' means that when the Buddha speaks of paratantra, he does not state the ultimate source of paratantra; hence it is called not speaking of the path yourself. The tīrthikas say that through pradhāna, Īśvara, and so forth all dharmas arise; 'all svabhāvas' refers to all dharmas. But between the Tathāgata's verbal teaching of the arising of dharmas from causes and conditions in response to capacities, is there an interval and difference, or no interval and difference? 'Siddhānta' refers to the four siddhāntas addressing capacities.
