The Buddha answered that his teaching does not have a contradiction. From "why is that?" downward, he investigates and explains. "Arising is non-arising" means: I understand that arising is precisely non-arising, because it is only the appearance of one's own mind. Whether existent or non-existent, all external dharmas originally have no arising in their nature; therefore I say they are unproduced. This is the general answer. In the particular answer there are two points: first, to destroy the tīrthikas' arising from causes, as they posit various distinct causes for having arising, he says all natures are unproduced; second, to refute the tīrthikas' positing of an arising of existence and nonexistence that does not have one's own clinging vikalpa as its condition. Furthermore, he tells Mahāmati, "for me, there is no existence or nonexistence," meaning that because he is free from views of existence and nonexistence, he speaks of non-arising through the discourse on non-arising.
