As for 'setting aside the speculative theses of the tīrthikas', [because they] generate interpretations following words and cling to them as speculative views, [the Buddha] sets them all aside without declaring an answer, causing them to reflect and attain it for themselves. Regarding 'the life principle is identical with the body', because the tīrthikas conceive that either the skandhas are the self or that the self is separate from the skandhas, they therefore declare that the body and the life principle are identical, different, and so forth; teachings of this kind are called inexpressible theses. As for 'constructing inexpressible theses concerning causes', they conceive that [things] arise without a cause, and this is what makes it inexpressible. But what the Buddha teaches is free from the grasper and the grasped, and does not give rise to vikalpa. As for 'Why set them aside?', it means: why not directly speak in this way to enlighten them, and instead set them aside? Why is this? It is simply because they cling to the grasper and the grasped and do not know that [everything is] only the appearance of one's own mind, and therefore he sets them aside. The four modes of declaration are as stated later in the text; setting aside is one of them. He not only sets aside those tīrthikas, but also from time to time teaches this for those whose faculties are not yet ripe.
