Mahāmati said to the Buddha, "World-Honoured One, the World-Honoured One speaks of three kinds of arhats. Which arhat is spoken of here? World-Honoured One, is it speaking of the tranquil path of the one vehicle? Or of a bodhisattva-mahāsattva expedience-manifesting as an arhat? Or of an apparition transformed by a Buddha?" The Buddha told Mahāmati, "It is the śrāvaka who attains the tranquil path of the one vehicle, not the others. The others practice the bodhisattva path and are apparitions transformed by a Buddha; by virtue of skillful means and original vows, they manifest rebirth among the great assembly in order to adorn the Buddha's retinue. Mahāmati, where there is discrimination, they preach various teachings, speaking of attaining the fruit and attaining dhyāna. Because dhyāna practitioners and entering dhyāna are all completely left behind, they manifest the characteristics of attaining the fruit by attaining the measure of their own mind, and this is spoken of as attaining the fruit. Furthermore, Mahāmati, those who wish to transcend dhyāna, the immeasurables, and the formless realm must leave behind the characteristics of the measure of one's own mind. Mahāmati, to say that the correct absorption of cessation of perception and feeling transcends the measure of one's own mind is not so. Why is this? Because it still has the measure of mind."
