涅槃之說有邪有正，佛欲說正乃先斥邪。言外道四種涅槃，名相如經所列，涅槃是果，果由因得，其因既邪，果亦非正，故云「非我所說」。我之所說涅槃者，直以妄識心滅耳。蓋有外道涅槃不離神我，神我即妄識，故以妄想識滅而對破之也。

The doctrine of nirvāṇa has the erroneous and the correct; wishing to explain the correct, the Buddha first refutes the erroneous. Regarding the four kinds of nirvāṇa of the tīrthikas, their names and lakṣaṇas are as listed in the sūtra. Nirvāṇa is the fruit; the fruit is obtained through causes. Since their causes are erroneous, the fruit is also not correct; therefore, he says, "not [the Dharma] taught by me." The nirvāṇa taught by me is simply the cessation of the mind of discriminating consciousness. Because the tīrthikas' nirvāṇa is not separate from the spiritual self, and the spiritual self is precisely the discriminating consciousness, he refutes them directly by means of the cessation of the discriminating consciousness.
