These four analogies: the first illustrates the vikalpa-svabhāva. In speaking of “the practices of cultivation,” it is like meditation possessing the ten kṛtsnāyatanas, meaning that blue, yellow, red, white, and so on all pervade everywhere; their object is originally one, yet because of the mind's ideation, various appearances manifest. The marks of vikalpa are also like this. Next, from “various cataracts” downward, it illustrates the paratantra-svabhāva: a cataract originally has no color, but through delusion one sees colors appear; hence there is no reality of color or non-color. The unawareness of paratantra is also like this. Furthermore, the two analogies of refining genuine gold and empty space free from cataracts both illustrate the pariniṣpanna-svabhāva. This means that when free of those two svabhāvas of vikalpa and paratantra, it is like gold without taints, or space without cataracts; hence it says, “the purification of vikalpa is also like this.”
