“What was known by former sages” refers to the behavioral characteristics of self-realized noble wisdom and the behavioral characteristics of the One Vehicle, meaning that past buddhas all accomplished equal and perfect awakening through these two portals of practice. Because they have been handed down successively from one to another, this is precisely what is called “the transmission from buddha to buddha and the succession from patriarch to patriarch.” This is a general answer to the previous request. From “vikalpa has no nature” downward, it specifically answers the behavioral characteristics of pratyātmāryajñāna. All dharmas are originally quiescent and extinguished; the ordinary and foolish, lacking awakening, give rise to falsehood and speak with discrimination, but false dharmas originally have no svabhāva. However, if one wishes to cultivate wondrous practice, one must observe for oneself in a quiet place. If one observes without ceasing, then all vikalpas are departed from without departing, and one gradually passes through the stages to enter the realm of the Tathāgata; what is called pratyātmāryajñāna becomes naturally fulfilled.
