大慧白佛言：「世尊！何故說三乘而不說一乘？」佛告大慧：「不自般涅槃法故，不說一切聲聞、緣覺一乘。以一切聲聞、緣覺，如來調伏授寂靜方便而得解脫，非自己力，是故不說一乘。復次大慧！煩惱障、業習氣不斷故，不說一切聲聞、緣覺一乘。不覺法無我，不離分段死，故說三乘。」

Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: “World-Honoured One! For what reason do you speak of the three vehicles instead of speaking of the One Vehicle?” The Buddha told Mahāmati: “Because it is not a teaching of attaining nirvāṇa by oneself, I do not speak of the One Vehicle for any śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas. Because all śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are tamed by the Tathāgata and granted the expedient means of tranquility to attain liberation, not by their own power, for this reason I do not speak of the One Vehicle. Furthermore, Mahāmati! Because their afflictive hindrances and karma vāsanā are not severed, I do not speak of the One Vehicle for any śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas. Because they do not awaken to the selflessness of dharmas and are not free from mortal death in portions, I speak of the three vehicles.”
