'Perceiving non-water as water' means falsely perceiving what is not water as water, solely because of craving and thirst, just like a thirsty deer running after a mirage; this analogizes ordinary beings presuming the nonexistent to be existent. With the noble it is not so, for noble ones see the characteristics of the three realms with samyagjñāna, devoid of afflictions and saṃsāra, hence it is called pure. The three liberations are wisdom; samādhi is concentration; when concentration and wisdom have arisen, they transcend arising and cessation and roam in the unowned; the unowned is ultimate emptiness. Regarding 'practicing the unowned', bodhisattvas can practice like this and also accord with the principle of neither existence nor nonexistence, hence it is said, 'there is neither existence nor non-existence.' In this way, existence and nonexistence are equal, and the Buddha-fruit is accomplished.
