3.166

Because it was explained above that detachment from cognitive objects is wisdom, he now inquires on the basis of "wisdom apprehends nothing." When the World-Honoured One speaks of "cognitive objects," this means that the sensory realms of the world are objects conditioned by foolish ordinary persons; when examined with correct wisdom (samyagjñāna), they are entirely nonexistent. Hence it is said: "Wisdom apprehends nothing; this is established as a measure of nominal designation." "Nominal designation" refers back to the realms established by false discrimination (vikalpa); since the realms cannot be apprehended, both the grasping and the grasped are nonexistent. Hence it is said that wisdom does not arise, and that whatever is nominally designated is nothing but a falsely discriminated conventional name.
