爾時，大慧菩薩復白佛言：「世尊！所言涅槃者，說何等法名為涅槃？而諸外道各起妄想。」佛告大慧：「諦聽！諦聽！善思念之，當為汝說。如諸外道妄想涅槃，非彼妄想隨順涅槃。」大慧白佛言：「唯然受教。」佛告大慧：「或有外道陰、界、入滅，境界離欲，見法無常，心心法品不生，不念去、來、現在境界，諸受陰盡，如燈火滅、如種子壞，妄想不生，斯等於此作涅槃想。大慧！非以見壞名為涅槃。」

At that time, Bodhisattva Mahāmati again addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honoured One, as for what is called nirvāṇa, what kind of dharma is spoken of as nirvāṇa, such that all the tīrthikas each generate false conceptualizations?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Listen attentively! Listen attentively and reflect well; I shall explain it for you. As all the tīrthikas falsely conceptualize nirvāṇa, their false conceptualizations do not accord with nirvāṇa." Mahāmati addressed the Buddha, saying: "I shall indeed receive the teaching." The Buddha told Mahāmati: "There are some tīrthikas for whom the aggregates, elements, and sense bases cease; their sensory realms are free from desire; they see dharmas as impermanent; the mental factors of mind do not arise; they do not keep in mind past, future, or present sensory realms; and all aggregates of feeling are exhausted, like the flame of a lamp being extinguished, or like a seed being destroyed, so that false conceptualization does not arise—these people form the notion of nirvāṇa in regard to this. Mahāmati, it is not by the destruction of views that it is named nirvāṇa."
