The ultimate principle is tranquil and absolute, neither existent nor nonexistent. Sentient beings are blind to this and fall into the two extremes, unable to return to the source. Therefore, Mahāmati poses the question on behalf of the assembly. The Buddha first answers in accordance with the question, and afterwards investigates and explains its meaning. "Relies on two kinds" and so forth means that worldly sentient beings, relying on the objects of existence and nonexistence, give rise to the views of existence and nonexistence. "Falling into entity and non-entity" refers precisely to the views of existence and nonexistence. "Desiring views" means taking pleasure in and adhering to these views. Regarding what is not the dharma of transcendence, they falsely claim it to be transcendence; hence it is said, "not leaving behind the characteristic of leaving behind."
