From "greed, anger, and delusion" downward further explains the reason they are not destroyers. Saying "whether internal or external" means that if one searches for the nature of the three poisons internally, externally, or in between, they are all ungraspable. Since they are ungraspable, how could they have an essential nature that could be grasped? Therefore, it concludes: "it is not that Buddhas, śrāvakas, and pratyekabuddhas are destroyers." This is because the Buddha and the two vehicles are originally liberated in their nature, being neither bound nor released. Further, saying "if there were one who is bound" means that if one first received and later did not grasp, then there would already be bondage; bondage is its fruit, and the fruit must have a cause, the cause being greed and the like. If there is bondage, then there is destruction; speaking of destruction in this way falls into the view of annihilating emptiness, hence it is called "the characteristic of nonexistence."
