4.160

佛告大慧：「如來之藏是善不善因，能遍興造一切趣生。譬如伎兒變現諸趣，離我我所，不覺彼故，三緣和合方便而生。外道不覺，計著作者，為無始虛偽惡習所熏，名為識藏。生無明住地，與七識俱，如海浪身常生不斷。離無常過、離於我論，自性無垢，畢竟清淨。」

The Buddha told Mahāmati: "The tathāgatagarbha is the cause of good and non-good, and is capable of producing all destinies and births everywhere. It is like an actor manifesting various destinies, free from self and what belongs to self; because of not being conscious of that, they arise through the skillful means of the harmony of the three conditions. Tīrthikas, not being conscious [of this], grasp at an agent; perfumed by beginningless false, evil habits, it is called the consciousness-receptacle (ālayavijñāna). Generating the stage of ignorance-abiding, it is accompanied by the seven consciousnesses, constantly arising without interruption like the mass of ocean waves. It is free from the fault of impermanence, free from doctrines of a self, its svabhāva is stainless, and it is ultimately pure."
