Then the Bodhisattva Mahāmati addressed the Buddha: "World-Honoured One, we only pray that you explain the ultimate distinct characteristics of the five dharmas, the svabhāvas, consciousness, and the two kinds of selflessness. I and the other bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, advancing continuously through all the stages, will discern these dharmas and enter into all Buddha-dharmas. Entering into all Buddha-dharmas means even up to the stage of the Tathāgatas' personal realization." The Buddha said to Mahāmati: "Listen attentively, listen attentively, and reflect well upon it!" Mahāmati addressed the Buddha: "Indeed, I shall receive your instruction." The Buddha told Mahāmati: "As for the distinct characteristics and paths of the five dharmas, the svabhāvas, consciousness, and the two kinds of selflessness, they are: nāma, lakṣaṇa, vikalpa, samyagjñāna, and tathatā. If practitioners cultivate and enter into the Tathāgata's noble realm of personal realization, they depart from the views of annihilation and permanence, existence and nonexistence, and the joy of the Dharma in correct absorption appears directly before them. Mahāmati, failing to awaken to those five dharmas, svabhāvas, consciousness, and the two kinds of selflessness, taking appearances of one's own mind to be external natures—this is the deluded conceptualization of ordinary people, not of the noble and virtuous ones."
