'As for those characteristics', etc., further explains that the two dharmas of name and characteristic do not go beyond the six consciousnesses grasping the six sense objects. That which names them is 'name'; that which is grasped is 'characteristic'; that which displays and establishes the various names and characteristics is 'deluded conceptualization'. Names such as 'elephant' and 'horse' display their characteristics by means of these names; once names and characteristics are established, maintaining that this thing is definitely thus without difference is called discrimination of deluded conceptualization. The above three dharmas belong to ordinary people. From 'As for correct knowledge' downward, the aspect of awakening is clarified with reference to the phenomena of noble and virtuous ones. Saying 'names and characteristics are unobtainable' means that if one wishes to seek correct knowledge, one merely awakens to the unreality of names and characteristics: like passing guests, the conscious mind does not arise, departs from annihilation and permanence, and does not fall into the realms of ordinary people and Hīnayānists—this is correct knowledge.
