"Furthermore, Mahāmati, the five dharmas are lakṣaṇa, nāma, vikalpa, tathatā, and samyagjñāna. Mahāmati, regarding lakṣaṇa, if location, shape, form, and so forth appear, this is called lakṣaṇa. If that has such a characteristic and is named 'vase' and so on, being this and not something else, this is spoken of as nāma. Setting up various names to display various characteristics, the citta and caittas regarding a vase and so on, is called vikalpa. That nāma and that lakṣaṇa are completely unfindable; from beginning to end there is no awareness. Regarding dharmas, there is no cyclical progression; being free from unreal vikalpa is called tathatā. The true, definitive, ultimate svabhāva is unfindable; that is the characteristic of Suchness (tathatā), the locus entered in accordance with truth by myself and all Buddhas, universally expounded in accordance with reality for the sake of sentient beings, set up and displayed. When one accords with and enters right awakening regarding it, neither cut off nor permanent, with vikalpa not arising, conforming to the noble realm of inward realization, having a characteristic that cannot be attained by any tīrthikas, śrāvakas, or pratyekabuddhas—this is called samyagjñāna. Mahāmati, these are called the five dharmas. The three svabhāvas, the eight consciousnesses, the two kinds of selflessness, and all Buddha-dharmas are completely subsumed within them. Therefore, Mahāmati, you should skillfully study this for yourself and also teach others; do not follow others."
