This explains the five dharmas subsuming the eight consciousnesses. When vikalpa arises upon the appearance of one's own mind, there are eight kinds of distinction, all of which are false and unreal characteristics. If one can abandon the two kinds of self-grasping, then both the grasper and the grasped cease, and the wisdom of the two kinds of selflessness arises from this, which is samyagjñāna and tathatā. Thus we know that although consciousness and so forth are distinct, they return together to the five dharmas and have no separate individual characteristics; the fundamental tenet is clear. Moreover, into these five dharmas, the three vehicles, the Buddhas, and all dharmas are completely subsumed.
