大慧白佛言：「世尊！若眾生生死本際不可知者，云何解脫可知？」佛告大慧：「無始虛偽過惡妄想習氣因滅，自心現知外義，妄想身轉，解脫不滅。是故無邊，非都無所有，為彼妄想作無邊等異名。觀察內外，離於妄想，無異眾生，智及爾焰一切諸法悉皆寂靜。不識自心現妄想故，妄想生，若識則滅。」

Mahāmati said to the Buddha: "World-Honoured One, if the primal limit of sentient beings' saṃsāra cannot be known, how can liberation be known?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "When the cause, the vāsanā of beginningless deceptive, fault-ridden vikalpa, ceases, and through the appearance of one's own mind one knows external objects, the vikalpa-body transforms, and liberation is not annihilated. Therefore it is boundless, not completely nonexistent; for that vikalpa, different names such as 'boundless' are made. Observing the internal and external, free from vikalpa, there are no different sentient beings; jñāna and jñeya, all dharmas, are entirely quiescent. Because one does not recognize that vikalpa appears from one's own mind, vikalpa arises; if recognized, it ceases."
