"Furthermore, because it prevents practitioners from giving rise to a mind of compassion, one should not eat meat. It is relished by ordinary fools, foul and impure, and devoid of good reputation; therefore, one should not eat meat. Because it causes mantras to fail, one should not eat meat. Because killers see forms and give rise to consciousness, becoming deeply attached to tastes, one should not eat meat. Those who eat meat are abandoned by the devas; therefore, one should not eat meat. Because it causes foul breath, one should not eat meat. Because it brings many nightmares, one should not eat meat. Because tigers and wolves smell its scent in the wilderness, one should not eat meat. Because it causes diet to lack moderation, one should not eat meat. Because it prevents practitioners from giving rise to revulsion [toward saṃsāra], one should not eat meat. I have previously taught: 'Whenever taking food and drink, one should regard it as eating one's child's flesh, and regard it as taking medicine'; therefore, one should not eat meat. It is impossible that I would permit the eating of meat. Furthermore, Mahāmati, in the past there was a king named Siṃhasaudāsa who ate various kinds of meat, eventually reaching the point of eating human beings; his ministers and subjects could not bear it, so they plotted rebellion and cut off his provisions. Because meat-eaters have such faults, one should not eat meat. Furthermore, Mahāmati, all killers take life and sell meat for the sake of wealth and profit; those foolish meat-eating sentient beings use money as a net to capture meat. Whether by wealth or by nets and hooks, those killers take airborne, waterborne, and terrestrial sentient beings and kill them in various ways, butchering and selling them to seek profit. Mahāmati, there is no fish or meat that exists without being ordered, without being sought, and without being intended. For this reason, one should not eat meat. Mahāmati, at times I taught the prohibition of five kinds of meat, or regulated ten kinds; now in this sūtra, all expedient allowances in all aspects and at all times are abolished, and all are entirely cut off. Mahāmati, the Tathāgatas, Arhats, and Samyaksambuddhas do not even eat [ordinary food], how much less fish and meat? Nor do they teach others to do so. Because great compassion goes before them, they view all sentient beings like an only child; therefore, they should not cause them to eat the flesh of their child."
