"Food and drink give rise to heedlessness;
Heedlessness gives rise to various conceptualizations;
From conceptualizations greed and desire arise;
Therefore, one should not eat it.
Because of food, greed and desire arise;
Greed intoxicates the mind;
Intoxication fosters craving and desire;
One is not liberated from birth and death.
Killing sentient beings for profit,
Netting meat with wealth—
Both are evil karmas;
At death, they fall into the Raurava Hell.
If there is no ordering, intending, or seeking,
Then there is no three-fold pure meat;
It does not exist without a cause,
Therefore, one should not eat it.
Those practitioners
Accordingly keep far away from it all;
The Buddha World-Honoured Ones of the ten directions
All alike reprove it.
Revolving and devouring one another,
At death they fall among tigers and wolves,
Foul, filthy, and loathsome;
Wherever born, they are constantly stupid.
Often born as caṇḍālas,
Hunters, and ḍomba outcasts,
Or born as ḍākinīs
And various meat-eating natures:
Rākṣasas, cats, wildcats, and the like—
They are born throughout among these.
In the *Hastikakṣya*, the *Mahāmegha*,
The *Aṅgulimālīya*,"
