"Conventional reckonings" refers to the conventional, provisional causes and conditions of birth and death. It means that ordinary people from the beginning have only pursued delusive conditions and transmigrated through birth and death, like links of a chain that cannot be severed. If one can comprehend that origination from delusive conditions is non-origination, therefore it is said: "The meaning of origination cannot be found." Stating that origination has no nature and does not arise, and so on, means that by comprehending that origination is non-origination, adherence to a nature does not arise, and one is freed from the deviant views of the tīrthikas. Yet I merely teach the meaning of the chain of causes and conditions so as to cause [them] to comprehend that origination is non-origination, which the foolish cannot understand. If, apart from the causes and conditions capable of producing, there were separately an arisen dharma, then I would be teaching a doctrine of no-cause, which would conversely destroy the meaning of the chain. Regarding "Like a lamp revealing manifold forms" and so on, the Buddha means: I teach the meaning of the chain precisely wishing to cause people to comprehend that origination is non-origination; otherwise, seeking non-origination apart from these arisen dharmas would be like manifold objects being revealed by a lamp, where the objects are not themselves the illumination. Thus it is said: "If the appearance of the chain were thus." This means that if the appearance of the chain were like this, then apart from causes and conditions there would separately be other dharmas.
