"Dissimilar things do not arise without a cause. If they did arise, all natures would entirely be impermanent. These are dissimilar things: maker and what is made have no distinction, yet all are seen to have distinctions. If nature were impermanent, it would fall into the nature and characteristic of an active cause. If it fell [into that], all natures would not be ultimate. If all natures fell into the characteristic of an active cause, impermanence itself ought to be impermanent; and because impermanence would be impermanent, all natures would not be impermanent, but ought to be permanent."
